Not!
Many people think that winter is a time of rest for farmers. Although the season is usually less hectic than the other three seasons, farmers and full-time country women are still working.
Some may be repairing equipment, others cleaning out barns and sheds (or doing home repairs), but most are preparing for the season ahead.
Last week I was at the Farmers Wife to purchase hamburger. Mendy and Russ were hard at work making sturdier signs for their market stand.
My neighbors Face-booked that they are now parents to a litter of swine (their first experience of farm animals being born). Other neighbors have seeds in germination chambers, and still others are setting schedules and goals.
Of course, the Big Work these days is maple syrup making. The other day I got to hang out all afternoon with Sue and Bob Nelson, of Nelsontrails Maple Products. I'll be writing about them here on OCJ when I return home from helping Kerry's family get settled in with new baby Isaac. And what a perfect time of year for a baby to be born, right on the cusp on new beginnings and new awakenings!
It may still be cold outside, but like busy bees, there's a buzz of activity inside. And it's all good.

Who We Are
The past few years, the area where I live, Crawford County, Ohio, has seen a wonderful explosion of younger families who are embracing the joys and challenges of living off the land. Because of them, amazing things are happening which have been embraced by our community. Farmer’s markets have been created and on-farm stores have opened. Families dedicated to growing organic produce and naturally raised meats are meeting the public’s needs for locally raised foods. And at the heart of this movement are the women.
Ohio Country Journal is my attempt to share the essence of farm life, focusing on, but not limited to, women. My goal is to bring you into our circle of friendship by inviting you to share your stories and experiences with us. You don’t have to be a full time country woman to benefit from joining us; you just have to be you.
The full-time country women featured in Ohio Country Journal are an inspiration to anyone who dares to follow her dreams, whether it is to live in the country or to bring the country life-style to their urban neighborhoods.

New Kid in Town
Well, almost.
Kerry and Ben left for the hospital bright and
early this morning because it is Isaac’s long awaited birthday. As I write from Kerry's house, Ben says that Kerry is hooked up to i.v.'s and waiting her turn in the delivery room. It won't be long, now!
It's a busy, busy day for our family.
Ava is fed and
Aunt Judy took her to school. Soon-to-be- Big Brother Evan is fed and ready for
Aunt Judy to come babysit him today.
Today is also the day that Ava's class gets to shop the book
fair. She's been looking forward to it and has had her list made out for quite some time, so I'll be joining her shopping spree before going to the hospital to meet my new little guy. I’ll
post a picture of him this evening.
