Who We Are

The past few years, the area where I live, Crawford County, Ohio, has seen a wonderful explosion of younger families who are embracing the joys and challenges of living off the land. Because of them, amazing things are happening which have been embraced by our community. Farmer’s markets have been created and on-farm stores have opened. Families dedicated to growing organic produce and naturally raised meats are meeting the public’s needs for locally raised foods. And at the heart of this movement are the women.

Ohio Country Journal is my attempt to share the essence of farm life, focusing on, but not limited to, women. My goal is to bring you into our circle of friendship by inviting you to share your stories and experiences with us. You don’t have to be a full time country woman to benefit from joining us; you just have to be you.

The full-time country women featured in Ohio Country Journal are an inspiration to anyone who dares to follow her dreams, whether it is to live in the country or to bring the country life-style to their urban neighborhoods.

Red Badges of Courage

Tomorrow is the conclusion of the Nelsonstrail story. Today I decided to share my experience with Robins, which are often associated as being the first harbingers of spring :)

Today I saw at least 100 robins in the field in front of my house and in the lane today during a burst of snowfall. I could not help but think of them as strutting around with their "Red Badges of Courage" proudly displayed on their breasts as the wind drove the snow into blinding sheets.

But not to worry; this Old English poem assures us that the Order of the Redbreasts can take care of themselves :)

The North Wind Doth Blow

The North wind doth blow and we shall have snow,
And what will poor robin do then, poor thing?

He'll sit in a barn and keep himself warm
and hide his head under his wing, poor thing.

Already the snow has stopped. The sun is bluing up the sky. I saw 2 Great Blue Herons at the reservoir this morning, along with many other spring migrating water birds.  All of this adds up to the fact that winter is losing its strength. But know what? I will miss it. I love snowfall and will take it over the cold rain that we had on Monday any day.
