Who We Are

The past few years, the area where I live, Crawford County, Ohio, has seen a wonderful explosion of younger families who are embracing the joys and challenges of living off the land. Because of them, amazing things are happening which have been embraced by our community. Farmer’s markets have been created and on-farm stores have opened. Families dedicated to growing organic produce and naturally raised meats are meeting the public’s needs for locally raised foods. And at the heart of this movement are the women.

Ohio Country Journal is my attempt to share the essence of farm life, focusing on, but not limited to, women. My goal is to bring you into our circle of friendship by inviting you to share your stories and experiences with us. You don’t have to be a full time country woman to benefit from joining us; you just have to be you.

The full-time country women featured in Ohio Country Journal are an inspiration to anyone who dares to follow her dreams, whether it is to live in the country or to bring the country life-style to their urban neighborhoods.

Sweet Harvest Preview

Sue Nelson is pictured filling maple syrup bottles after a long day of boiling down sugar water with her husband, Bob. I had the good fortune to hang out with the Nelson's during the afternoon of their first boil-off to interview them for a feature story for the Galion Inquirer. That story with five full color pictures is in today's edition. The story is not available online, but never fear: I plan to slice the story into smaller, blog-sized bits and post it as series here on OCJ beginning tomorrow Monday (this is an edit, I decided to post about the Lutheran Memorial Camp's maple syrup festival today instead of beginning the series about Sue).

Today is a much needed Out-and-About day after mostly being inside for the past week. Our destination is not clear, we may go to Burton, Ohio for their maple syrup festival, or we may go to a few nature spots to check on spring migration.

So, stay tuned to this blog for Sue's profile. You will be amazed at how much work goes into making pure maple syrup!

Marcheta *footloose and fancy free for a day (!)
