Who We Are

The past few years, the area where I live, Crawford County, Ohio, has seen a wonderful explosion of younger families who are embracing the joys and challenges of living off the land. Because of them, amazing things are happening which have been embraced by our community. Farmer’s markets have been created and on-farm stores have opened. Families dedicated to growing organic produce and naturally raised meats are meeting the public’s needs for locally raised foods. And at the heart of this movement are the women.

Ohio Country Journal is my attempt to share the essence of farm life, focusing on, but not limited to, women. My goal is to bring you into our circle of friendship by inviting you to share your stories and experiences with us. You don’t have to be a full time country woman to benefit from joining us; you just have to be you.

The full-time country women featured in Ohio Country Journal are an inspiration to anyone who dares to follow her dreams, whether it is to live in the country or to bring the country life-style to their urban neighborhoods.

The Countdown Begins....

In just four weeks our area farmers' markets begin a new season! Already vendors have plants growing in high-tunnel greenhouses, and are getting other prep work underway.

For market managers, it is time to begin advertising and promotion work. I am doing my small part by working up fliers for NorthSide Farmers Market, held Tuesdays at K.F.C., and a joint venture with Bucyrus' 'Lil Farmer's Market, held on Saturday's at Sear's in Bucyurs.

This is the quarter-page flier from last year, and basically it will stay the same.

For the joint venture, I am designing a full page flier that will be divided in half with information on both markets. My idea is that this way the fliers won't take up as much space on bulletin boards as two separate fliers would, and if done right, will let people know that our area has two great opportunities to by fresh, locally grown and raised food.

Whatever area you live in, I highly recommend seeking out a farmer's market. You can do this by going to Local Harvest and click on the link for farmers markets in the box that says "what are you looking for?"  My search took me to this page, where many local farmers' markets populated, including NorthSide. :)

With the buzz about Monsanto bullying the world's food producers (yes, even in other countries who, so far, have refused to buckle under as the U.S. has), it is more important than ever for us to know where our food comes from and who is growing it. At farmers' markets, you get to meet your supplier face-to-face. There's a feeling of trust that just cannot be found in factory-packaged food.

Plus, shopping at open-air markets is downright fun! You'll see your neighbors and meet new friends in a festive atmosphere. What could be better?

Happy eating, everyone!
