Who We Are

The past few years, the area where I live, Crawford County, Ohio, has seen a wonderful explosion of younger families who are embracing the joys and challenges of living off the land. Because of them, amazing things are happening which have been embraced by our community. Farmer’s markets have been created and on-farm stores have opened. Families dedicated to growing organic produce and naturally raised meats are meeting the public’s needs for locally raised foods. And at the heart of this movement are the women.

Ohio Country Journal is my attempt to share the essence of farm life, focusing on, but not limited to, women. My goal is to bring you into our circle of friendship by inviting you to share your stories and experiences with us. You don’t have to be a full time country woman to benefit from joining us; you just have to be you.

The full-time country women featured in Ohio Country Journal are an inspiration to anyone who dares to follow her dreams, whether it is to live in the country or to bring the country life-style to their urban neighborhoods.

Winter's on the Wing

Happy April!!!

This morning is bright and sunny; appropriate for the first day of April. I am hoping that it is not an April Fool's joke by old Sol and the Clouds :)

After a cold, snowy March, today feels like the first day of Spring to me. I can't help but think of the song, "Winter's on the Wing" from the musical play, "The Secret Garden".

Galion Community Theatre, Inc, produced "The Secret Garden" in 2000. I was in charge of costumes. What fun my staff and I had dressing the actors and actresses in period clothing! I still remember working out what everyone needed to wear in each scene, but what has made a lasting impression on my life was the music.

If you have not seen the play nor heard the songs, I highly recommend that you borrow the music c.d. from the library and attend a performance if the play comes to a stage near you.

After our long winter, birds are on the wing, enjoying the fine Spring air and glorious sunshine. This represents "freedom" to me. And it is what I intend to do today, too. Ava is spending the day and night; she brought her binoculars and we plan to visit a few nature spots today.

Marchta *stand and breathe it all the day

Winter's on the wing,
Here's a fine spring morn'
Comin' clear through the night,
Come the day I say.
Winter's taken flight
Sweepin' dark cold air
Out to sea, Spring is born,
Comes the day say I,

And you'll be here to see it.
Stand and breathe it all the day.
Stoop, and feel it. Stop and hear it.
Spring, I say.

And now the sun is climbin' high,
Rising fast on fire,
Glaring down through the gloom,
Gone the gray, I say.
The sun it spells the doom
Of the winter's reign,
Ice and chill must retire
Comes the May say I,

And you'll be here to see it.
Stand and breathe it all the day.
Stoop, and feel it. Stop and hear it.
Spring, I say.

I say, be gone, ye howling gales,
Be off, ye frosty morns!
All ye solid streams begin to thaw.
Melt, ye waterfalls,
Part ye frozen winter walls.
See, see now it's starting.

And now the mist is liftin' high,
Leavin' bright blue air
Rollin' clean 'cross the moor
Comes the day I say.
The storm'll soon be by
Leaving clear blue sky,
Soon the sun will shine,
Comes the day, say I.

And you'll be here to see it.
Stand and breathe it all the day.
Stoop and feel it. Stop and hear it.
Spring, I say.
