Who We Are

The past few years, the area where I live, Crawford County, Ohio, has seen a wonderful explosion of younger families who are embracing the joys and challenges of living off the land. Because of them, amazing things are happening which have been embraced by our community. Farmer’s markets have been created and on-farm stores have opened. Families dedicated to growing organic produce and naturally raised meats are meeting the public’s needs for locally raised foods. And at the heart of this movement are the women.

Ohio Country Journal is my attempt to share the essence of farm life, focusing on, but not limited to, women. My goal is to bring you into our circle of friendship by inviting you to share your stories and experiences with us. You don’t have to be a full time country woman to benefit from joining us; you just have to be you.

The full-time country women featured in Ohio Country Journal are an inspiration to anyone who dares to follow her dreams, whether it is to live in the country or to bring the country life-style to their urban neighborhoods.

Special of the Day

Almost everyone has a special dish that they serve at every holiday. In fact, the holiday might not seem the same if the dish is missing! Today Gladys has graciously come to my rescue for today's blog while I am on a mini-vacation with Kerry and grand kids by sharing her special holiday dish.  This year her party was small, just her and her hubby, but Gladys still made the day special by serving her specialty dish. Gladys is known for her lovely table settings; she was designing them before they came to be called "tablescapes". Even though their Easter meal was just the two of them, Gladys did not shirk on her "tablescape". I would have been shocked if she would have skipped it.  :) Marcheta *tried and true friends are the best!

This is a big hit with everyone I have served it to. It is a very pretty, colorful dish. It is a standard dish at my house for Christmas & Easter.

Yesterday my table was yellow & pale green, wish I had taken a pic of the Vegetable Medley, I had it in a yellow casserole. Also had a centerpiece of yellow & white crocus. And the best part of it all, I did this just for the 2 of us!!!!!!

Swiss Vegetable Medley
1 (16oz) frozen broccoli, carrots, & cauliflower--thaw & drain
1 can cream soup (mushroom or celery) undiluted--I prefer cream of celery
1/2 c. sour cream
1/4 t. peppe1 jar chopped pimentos (4 oz)
1 c. shredded cheese ( I have used cheddar) your preference.
1 c. french fried onions, divided
In a bowl, combine vegetables, soup, sour cream, pepper, pimentos & 1/2 c. cheese. Stir in half of the onions, mix well. Pour into an ungreased 1 qt. casserole. Cover & bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 min. or until bubbly. Uncover, sprinkle with remaining cheese & onions. Return to oven until cheese is melted, about 5 min. Yield 6 servings For holidays I double the recipe.
